Project overview The challenge
I was engaged by icare to help develop and maintain the Global Experience Language (GEL) library, as well as to re-think ways of how modules can be re-purposed to work across different applications and be more flexible for content creators while being useful to the user.
The icare website had a limited number of components which was originally designed for the policy and claims portals and later re-purposed for the public website meaning some components weren’t fit for purpose and needed to be re-designed.
The solution
The GEL library consist of multiple components that allows content creators and developers to easily create new pages by using a mix and match method without the need to engage designers to redesign each page from scratch. This means, pages can be created quickly and efficiently while adhering to the global template style.
The other benefit of the GEL library being used across the public website and portals, is that the expected behaviour for each of the components is always the same, making components and pages familiar, allowing for the completion of task across the different websites and portals easy for the users.
Each piece of the GEL library is carefully considered and tested prior to development and release. Before a component is designed and added to the library, a use case scenario is defined along with a set of requirements and how it can add value to the users, as well as making sure it will adhere to the WCAG 2.1 AA standards.
So when I had to create new modules and or re-design existing components, I would carefully consider the use case scenario and requirements and always made sure that the new designs can be scaled up if needed.
For the process – each component would be wireframed, designed, prototyped, and validated via Google Optimize or Usability Hub before it is added to the development backlog for elaboration and build.
By designing and utilising a GEL library, it has the added benefit of unifying the icare experience across the public website and portals regardless of what combination a page is created using the many different modules and components available to the content creators and developers. This in turn adds to speed, efficiency and cost saving for the business when creating sections and pages for the website and portals.
